London cops donate 1,800 pairs of socks

People in need on the streets of London will at least have warm feet, thanks to the generosity of the London Police Service.

According to police, more than 1,800 pairs of socks were donated by LPS members during what's known at "Socktober," a campaign to gather donations of socks in October. Members of the foot patrol unit will give out the socks to people in need over the coming weeks.

“As the weather gets colder, it is much more challenging for those who spend most of their time on the street and keeping your feet warm is really important to protect against frostbite,” said Rick Robson, head of the London Police Association. “This is the first time we have participated in Socktober and we’re really pleased with the response."

Officers who walk the beat downtown, in Old East, and on Richmond Row will carry socks with them to give to people in need that they encounter on the streets. Some of the socks will also go to My Sister's Place, while some will be given to children in need.

“Our members look out for those who are homeless and do their best to support them in the moment,” said Sgt. Mike Pottruff, head of the Foot Patrol Unit. “This is one more way we can help.”
