Vecchio vows to be a strong voice for Elgin-Middlesex-London

The riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London will remain blue under the Conservative Party of Canada.

Incumbent MP Karen Vecchio has been reelected to represent the riding. Vecchio and her campaign staff met with supporters on Monday night following the election results, at the Boston Pizza in St. Thomas.

Vecchio was greeted with signs and noise-makers outside of the venue. Once she walked inside of the restaurant, several people crowded to offer their congratulations as Vecchio made her way around. During her speech, Vecchio thanked her supporters, family members, and campaign staff in her reelection, promising "to be a strong voice" for residents within the riding.

Vecchio was first elected as MP in 2015 and said being reelected in 2019 gives some validation to the work she has done so far.

"This is really a great way of saying 'you're doing a great job,'" she said.

Vecchio described the overall process in the 2019 election as being "totally different" in comparison to when she was first elected.

While campaigning, Vecchio said one of the main concerns residents approached her with was in regards to affordability. Moving forward with a Liberal government, Vecchio said the concerns she has heard while going door-to-door will be something she pushes to the forefront.

"Sometimes when you're in Parliament, you're living in that bubble so you have to remind yourself what's really on the ground happening," she said. "So that has given me time to really reconnect and make sure that I bring those key issues back to Parliament."

Election results as of 11:30 p.m. on Monday, show that Vecchio received 50.7 per cent of the votes, followed by Liberal candidate Pam Armstrong who had 22.5 per cent of the votes, and NDP candidate Bob Hargreaves who had 17.7 per cent of the votes. Other candidates who campaigned within the riding included Green Party candidate Ericha Hendel, People's Party candidate Donald Helkaa, Libertarian candidate Richard Styve, and Christian Heritage candidate Peter Redecop.
