A five-vehicle crash involving two transport trucks on Highway 401 west of London has left one person dead.
The serious crash happened around 11 a.m. Friday between Iona Road and Union Road, forcing OPP to close that stretch of the busy highway.
"Five vehicles in total were involved: two tractor-trailers, one five-tonne commercial truck and two passenger vehicles," the Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release issued Friday afternoon. "At the time of the collision, all vehicles were travelling eastbound and were merging into one lane due to construction ahead."
One person in one of the passenger vehicles died.
According to police, one person was rushed to hospital by land ambulance while another person was airlifted to hospital. Both are in stable condition.
The eastbound lanes were closed for several hours while police conducted an investigation. Police reopened the highway just before 10 p.m.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Elgin County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
