Candle blamed for apartment fire

One person was taken to hospital and several others were displaced after an unattended candle sparked a blaze at a two-storey building in London.

A hang-up call to 911 led emergency crews to 229 Hamilton Rd., just east of Adelaide Street, around 3:15 a.m. on Thursday. Firefighters were met with a fully engulfed apartment fire inside a rear, ground floor unit.

"Crews were able to take an offensive fire attack and extinguished the fire quite quickly," said Platoon Chief Colin Shewell.

Damage to the building, which is made up of seven apartments and a Chinese food restaurant, is estimated at $100,000.

"The damage was contained to the one unit. It was mostly from a combination of fire, heat, and smoke," said Shewell.

One person suffered minor injuries in the fire and was taken to hospital as a precaution. That individual has since been released.

The building's tenants were displaced due to the blaze with all finding accommodations for the night. It is expected all but those who live in the unit where the fire began will be allowed back into their homes. That family has been advised by fire officials to contact local agencies for long term help.

Shewell said investigators reconstructed the scene determining the fire began in a bedroom.

"From the information we were provided, possibly a candle came in contact with flammable materials in the room," said Shewell. "This serves as a reminder that having any candles or flammable items near candles, even if you are in the room, you really have to pay attention to where these items are."

Working smoke alarms are credited with alerting residents to the fire and helped them to escape quickly.

A section of Hamilton Road was closed while crews battled the fire and investigated the cause. It was reopened around 7 a.m.
