SIU notified after five arrested in Elgin County

Ontario's law-enforcement watchdog agency has been called in after five people were arrested in a local hemp field.

The Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police said they responded to a report of suspicious vehicles gathered in a field in Bayham, shortly after 3 a.m. Monday. When officers arrived, several people fled the scene.

The OPP Emergency Response Team and K-9 Unit were then utilized, and as a result, five people were taken into custody.

One person suffered undisclosed non-life threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Because of that, the OPP has notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has invoked its mandate. No further information on this incident has been released.

Anyone with information is asked to pass their tip along to the SIU by calling (416) 622-2342.
