PC infant formula recalled

Testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has led to a recall of a President's Choice brand of infant formula.

The CFIA announced Sunday that a recall was being issued for President's Choice Lower Iron milk-based powdered infant formula. The recall was issued due to possible Cronobacter contamination.

The recall affects President's Choice Lower Iron milk-based powdered infant formula in the 900-gram size with an expiry date of August 29, 2021. The UPC code is 0 60383 69839 3. Anyone who has this product is advised to throw it out or return it to the store from which it was purchased.

"Although Cronobacter is not commonly linked to human illness, in rare cases it can cause serious or fatal infections," the CFIA said in a recall advisory. "Cronobacter can cause rare bloodstream and central nervous system infections and has been associated with severe intestinal infection [necrotizing enterocolitis] and blood poisoning [sepsis], especially in newborns."

Fortunately, there have been no illnesses reported in association with this recall. However, a CFIA investigation is underway that could lead to the recall of other products.
