Woman seriously hurt in hammer attack

Charges have been laid against a 68-year-old St. Thomas man accused of attacking his common law wife with a hammer.

St. Thomas police were called to the couple's home around 8 a.m. on Saturday. When officers arrived on scene they found a man and a 63-year-old woman in the lane way.

The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The man was arrested without incident. He is now charged with one count each of assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, and breach of court order. The man was under a weapons ban stemming from a previous incident.

He remains in police custody.
