Grieving families targeted by thieves

Provincial police are advising grieving families to be careful what funeral details they share publicly following an increase in break and enters in Middlesex and Elgin counties.

According to OPP, the two counties have seen a sudden rise in the number of homes being burglarized while families are away at funerals.

As a result of the emerging trend, police are encouraging families to be cautious when posting funeral arrangements online and in local newspapers. Specifically, families should refrain from sharing any address information, police said.

Police also recommend that those planning on being away from their home for an extended period of time tell a trusted neighbour or family member who can watch over their place.

Anyone who spots any suspicious activity should report it to law enforcement immediately, police said.
