Huron at Western implements student pledge to foster compassion, selflessness

A Liberal Arts university in London is adopting a pledge for incoming students in an effort to adhere them to the school's core principles.

Huron at Western said the pledge, known as “The Huron Promise,” will be signed by all incoming students and will further the institution’s mission of developing "Leaders with Heart." Through the pledge, new students will be asked to a commit to Huron’s inclusive, welcoming and character-oriented community.

“Students commit to placing personal integrity and respect and compassion for others at the core of [their] endeavours,” the pledge states.

The university added that "The Huron Promise" will serve to remind students how they should conduct themselves and behave during their time at the university, in turn, creating a positive and thriving community for all. This will include being called on to volunteer in the community during the course of their studies.

“Huron is committed to creating a university culture that cultivates humility, open-mindedness and students’ willingness to serve their local and global communities,” said Dr. Geoff Read, vice president and dean of Faculty Arts and Social Science, in a news release. “This pledge further reiterates our determination to encourage students to think about the people, cultures and environments around them because we cannot hope to create a better world if we choose only to focus on ourselves.”
