Man warned about taking sand from beach

Provincial police in Elgin County are reminding people that, if you need sand for your home, you can't take it from the beach.

An Elgin OPP officer was watching traffic in the area of the main beach in Port Stanley on Monday morning, when a car pulled up behind the cruiser. A man got out, and started filling a bucket with beach sand.

When asked what he was doing, the man told police he was getting sand to level stones at his home in London.

"Police warned him regarding the criminal offense of theft under $5,000 and advised that he could legally purchase sand from a store in London, Ontario," police said in a news release issued Thursday.
