SIU probing London crash after robbery in Sarnia

Two Sarnia robbery suspects are in custody after a police pursuit in London that saw two other people seriously hurt.

The incident began when Sarnia police started following a vehicle alleged to have been involved in an armed bank robbery in the city Sunday afternoon. OPP picked up the pursuit once the vehicle got onto Hwy. 402.

Around 4:30 p.m., London police were notified by OPP that the suspect vehicle had gotten off the highway and was now entering the city. After getting several tips from the public, police were able to arrest two suspects and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the bank robbery. Charges are said to be pending.

A 27-year-old woman and a 9-year-old girl were hurt during the pursuit when an OPP cruiser collided with the taxi they were in on Southdale Road at Verulam Street. Both were taken to hospital in critical condition. The cab driver was also taken to hospital following the crash. Police have not said whether the officer who was driving the cruiser was hurt.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified about the incident as two civilians were seriously injured. Four investigators, two forensic investigators, and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.

Southdale Road East between Montgomery Road and Easy Street was closed for the investigation, but re-opened just before noon Monday.
