Thunderstorms pass through region

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of southwestern Ontario.

The watch was issued around 10:40 a.m. Sunday for Chatham-Kent, London-Middlesex, Windsor Essex as well as, Norfolk, Elgin and Oxford County.

"A weak cold front slowly moving in from the north may trigger severe thunderstorms with torrential downpours and local rainfall amounts of 50 mm in an hour or less and wind gusts to 90 km per hour this afternoon into this evening," said the weather agency.

A severe thunderstorm watch for London - Middlesex was upgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning.  The watch for Sarnia was upgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning around 4:10 p.m. The watch for Chatham-Kent was upgraded to a warning around 4:18 p.m.

According to the weather agency, "meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain."

All of the warnings and watches have since ended.

Environment Canada is reminding people to pay attention to weather conditions and take caution if severe or threatening weather approaches.
