Another inmate death at EMDC

Another inmate at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre has died.

Ontario's Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services confirmed an inmate was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday.

"Staff responded immediately performing first aid and calling paramedics. The inmate was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased," Ministry Spokesperson Greg Flood said in a statement to Blackburn News.

No other details, including the inmate's name, age or suspected cause of death have been released.

"It is not appropriate for the ministry to publicly comment further as investigations are underway," said Flood.

This is the 15th inmate death at the provincial jail since 2009 and the second one this year. The bulk of the previous deaths have been attributed to drug overdoses.

When an inmate dies at the institution a number of investigations are launched, Flood added. The office of the Chief Coroner works to determine the cause and manner of death, while an internal investigation by the ministry reviews whether all policies and procedures were followed. Local police also investigate to determine if the death was due to criminal activity. If a death is determined to have been from something other than natural causes a mandatory inquest is called to examine the circumstances.
