Impaired driver leaves trail of damage in St. Thomas

A St. Thomas man is facing charges after a driver was found passed out at the wheel of a vehicle that left a trail of damage in its wake.

St. Thomas police said they got a call early Thursday morning about a speeding, erratic driver on Aldborough Avenue who suddenly came to a complete stop at Airey Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, the found a man passed out at the wheel. The vehicle had heavy damage to its front. Investigators soon learned that the damage to the vehicle was related to a path of damage along Holland Street.

"A couple of trees had been struck, a fence surrounding a high voltage transformer was struck and the stop sign at the corner of Holland and Aldborough Avenue had been driven over and pulled out of the ground," police said in a statement issued Thursday.

A 26-year-old man was arrested and charged with one count of operating a vehicle while impaired by drug, one count of failing to stop after a collision, two counts driving while prohibited, and two counts of driving while suspended. Police said the man has now been arrested for driving while impaired by drug three times.
