Bishop condemns Sri Lanka attacks

Bishop Ronald Fabbro of the Roman Catholic Diocese of London is calling the attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday "shocking and cruel."

He released a statement Sunday in the wake of the attacks that killed at least 290 people and left hundreds injured. The terror attacks targeted churches and hotels on Easter Sunday.

"Along with the rest of the world, I learned this morning of the shocking and cruel terror attacks in Sri Lanka," Bishop Fabbro said in the statement released Sunday. "Easter Sunday is our most holy day, a joyful day that has turned to tears for the innocents who have been injured and killed. These deliberate assaults were not just against our brothers and sisters but on everyone who values life, love, and peace. Together with Pope Francis, and on behalf of the faithful of the Diocese of London, I condemn these acts of hatred and express our sorrow for the victims and their families."

There have been no reports of any Canadian casualties however, the Government of Canada is recommending that any Canadians currently in Sri Lanka limit their movements and avoid affected areas.

"These attacks were made on Easter Sunday, the day we proclaim Christ’s victory over death and sin," Bishop Fabbro said. "Let us join in prayer with all believers and people of good will, asking God to deliver us from every evil. May God grant peace in our days, and may we redouble our efforts to live out Christ’s commandment to love one another as He loved us."
