Freezing rain, rain likely this weekend

After a cold week, residents of the London area can expected a slippery and wet weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for London, Middlesex County, and Elgin County. It says there is the risk of freezing rain on Saturday night, along with up to 25 millimetres of rain.

"Rain will begin late Saturday evening or after midnight," the advisory said. "In areas where temperatures remain below the freezing mark, this precipitation could fall briefly as freezing rain before temperatures rise above zero. Rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm are expected before the rain tapers off late Sunday morning or early Sunday afternoon."

Environment Canada says there could be ponding of water on streets and in low lying areas.

The forecast for Sunday is also calling for brisk winds of up to 80 km/h out of the southwest, which are expected to persist throughout the day.
