Fire leaves homeowner in critical condition

A house fire south of St. Thomas has left one person in hospital with serious injuries.

The Central Elgin Fire and Rescue department and Elgin OPP were called to a home on Sparta Line at Sunset Road around 9:40 p.m. Monday. Police said officers and firefighters were able to determine when they arrived that the homeowner had not gotten out of the house after the fire started.

"The responding OPP officer and a volunteer fire fighter were able to approach the rear of the residence and remove the homeowner who had sustained burns and injuries from the fire," police said in a statement issued Wednesday.

The homeowner was rushed to hospital and, according to police, remains in critical condition.

Police do not believe the fire was suspicious in nature, however, the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
