Man tasered, arrested following violent struggle

A 22-year-old man is facing charges after a violent confrontation in St. Thomas.

St. Thomas police say officers were called shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday to a residence in the downtown core. A resident told a 911 dispatcher that a man was trying to smash in his front door. Staff Sergeant Russ Yates said officers found a man near the scene with a steel bar in his possession.

The suspect allegedly threw the bar at a police officer and narrowly missed. Officers had to use a taser to subdue the man, who was struggling violently. He was taken as a precaution to Elgin General Hospital to be checked for injuries. He was treated and turned over to police, said Yates.

The man is charged with mischief, assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest. He was released on a promise-to-appear in court where he will have a chance to defend himself against these charges.
