UPDATE: One person killed in multi-vehicle 401 crash

One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on the westbound 401 east of London.

The collision in the westbound lanes of the highway at Foldens Line (Oxford Road 6) near Ingersoll happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday. The collision involved several tractor trailers and vehicles.

Oxford OPP said one motorist was pronounced dead at scene. The person's name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin. A second motorist was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"We know collisions like this tend to draw a lot of attention and we would ask eastbound drivers on the 401 to keep their eyes firmly affixed on the roadway, pay attention to your surroundings, arrive safely, and be aware of everyone else on the road," OPP Sgt. Laura Brown said in a video posted to Twitter.

The fatal crash was one of three in the same stretch of highway in the westbound lanes on Wednesday. The two other collisions involved around 27 motor vehicles west of Sweaburg Road. Minor injuries were reported at both scenes.

Police anticipated eastbound Highway 401 would be closed for several hours between Highway 2 to Highway 19/Harris Street.  The highway re-opened early Thursday morning.

The collisions happened while the area was under a blowing snow advisory. Environment Canada warned lake effect flurries combined with westerly winds up to 70 km/h would lead to widespread blowing snow that would reduce visibility for drivers into Wednesday evening.
