New England Patriots win Super Bowl LIII

Tom Brady continued to make his case as the greatest quarterback in Super Bowl history.

Brady and the New England Patriots, along with head coach Bill Belichick, rewrote the history books with their sixth NFL title. The Patriots broke out of a defensive battle in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIII, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta Sunday night, beating the Los Angeles Rams 13-3.

This Super Bowl made history for several reasons. It was the lowest-scoring title game of the Super Bowl era, with 16 points scored between the two teams. It was also the first time neither team scored a touchdown through the first three quarters of play. Rams head coach Sean McVay became the youngest head coach in Super Bowl history at 33.

Brady and Belichick, at age 41 and 65 respectively, are now the oldest quarterback and head coach to win a Super Bowl title.

The first quarter was a scoreless tie with one turnover by the Patriots. Brady had his first pass of the game intercepted for the first time in his long playoff career. The Rams were unable to capitalise when they missed a field-goal try. Two Los Angeles possessions and one New England possession ended in punts.

The rest of the first half passed with no team crossing the other's goal line, but New England kicked a field goal early in the second quarter for a 3-0 lead at halftime. The lone field goal came despite the Patriots racking up 195 yards in the first half to the Rams' 57.

Following a halftime performance headlined by Maroon 5, the third quarter passed with still no touchdown scored. The Rams kicked a field goal late in the quarter to tie the game at 3-3. That tie was broken in the fourth quarter when Sony Michel scored the game's only touchdown. New England extended their lead with a field goal by Stephen Gostkowski. The Rams tried to put together a score and they attempted a field goal of their own to pull within one score, but missed.

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was named the most valuable player, finishing with ten catches for 141 yards.
