New flights coming to London Airport

Londoners looking to fly to Edmonton, Halifax, and the Vancouver area will soon have more opportunities to do so.

Swoop, WestJet's discount airline, has announced it will be offering daily flights from the London International Airport to Edmonton and Abbotsford, B.C., and six flights a week to Halifax. The flights to Edmonton begin April 28, while the flights to Halifax and Abbotsford will begin May 24. Passengers will fly on 189-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

“Today’s announcement is wonderful news for London and our region of Ontario,” said Airport CEO Mike Seabrook in a statement released Tuesday. “We’re focused on being the ‘Easy and Comfortable’ airport and Swoop’s new service is a perfect fit. Our passengers will be able to get to more destinations with direct flights the easy and comfortable way."

The addition of the Swoop flights will also lower costs for others flying out of London. According to Lauren Stafford, Business Development and Marketing at the airport, the new flights will allow the airport to lower its Airport Improvement Free from $15 to $7.

According to airport officials, airport traffic increased by three per cent 2018, finishing at 536,000 passengers. The addition of the new Swoop flights, that number is expected to grow by a few hundred thousand.
