Damage pegged at $1-million in Simcoe boat fires

Several boats were damaged as a fire swept through a large boat storage facility in Simcoe Sunday.

Norfolk Deputy Fire Chief Gord Stilwell said via a Periscope video posted on the OPP West's official Twitter page that the first crews were called around 3:30 p.m. to Team Marine Ltd., located on Highway 24 south of Simcoe. Stilwell said when crews arrived, three boats were completely engulfed. OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk said when the video was recorded after 6 p.m. that there may have been as many as five boats affected.

Crews from Port Dover, Simcoe, and Vittoria assisted with the fire.

Stilwell said that the fires were tough to put out because of their location at the facility, and the damage is extensive.

"We're going to be looking at close to a million dollars in damage, but that's preliminary for sure," said Stilwell in the video.

Crews were still on scene late Sunday night. Highway 24 near the scene was closed for some time, but was in the process of being reopened.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Additional details will be passed along as they become available.
