Eight cop cars hit by fleeing vehicle

A London man and a Wallaceburg woman are facing charges after eight police cruisers were damaged trying to stop a vehicle.

London police were called to a parking lot on Cherry Hill Boulevard about a man allegedly trying to break into vehicles around 1 a.m. Wednesday. Police stopped a vehicle seen leaving the area when they arrived, but when officers tried to speak with the driver the vehicle took off.

Another officer who spotted the fleeing vehicle in the area of Wharncliffe Road North and Western Road tried to stop it, but was unsuccessful. The vehicle backed into a police cruiser soon after on Trott Drive, before hitting several more cruisers in the area of Riverside Drive and Wonderland Road.

Police were finally able to stop the vehicle by boxing it in on Springbank Drive. Two people were arrested.

The vehicle's plates, along with a second set found inside, had been stolen.

Damage to the eight police cruisers is estimated at $16,300.

Ethan Michael Bastow, 24, of London and Samantha Leclair, 20, of Wallaceburg are charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Bastow is additionally charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and resisting arrest.

Both were scheduled to appear in London court in relation to the charges on Wednesday.
