Lightning, Vassell 'part ways'

The London Lightning are replacing their head coach.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, the team said it had agreed to "part ways" with head coach Keith Vassell, effective immediately.

"The Lightning would like to thank Coach Keith for his year plus of service and wish him the best of luck in the future," the statement said.

The team also announced the return of Elliott Etherington, who will be the head coach for the Lightning for the remainder of the season. Etherington was a member of the coaching staff last season, when the Lightning won the National Basketbell League of Canada championship.

"I am extremely excited be back in London. I had a great opportunity last year and I'm appreciative to Vito Frijia to give me the opportunity to come back here and continue our winning success in London," Etherington said. "The great thing is that there's a good mixture of guys that I'm comfortable with and guys I got to learn and that creates an awesome opportunity and challenge as a coach. I think all in all we have to focus on tough defense and our principals, make sure to be on the same page. If we can do all of that combined with positive energy and togetherness sky's the limit for this team.”

The Lightning have struggled early in the 2018-2019 NBLC season. They are currently in second place in the Central division with a record of 4-4.
