Officials are issuing a warning to pet owners after recalling several brands of dog food, including one sold in Canada.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration put out a recall notice for eight brands of dry dog food that may contain lethal amounts of vitamin D. The FDA said test results showed the affected products contained up to 70 times more than the intended amount of vitamin D.
Sunshine Mills Inc. is one of the brands listed in the recall and sells its products across Canada. The recall for the brand includes:
•Evolve Chicken and Rice Puppy Dry Dog Food - 14 lbs and 18 lbs bag •Sportsman's Pride Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food - 40 lbs bag •Triumph Chicken and Rice Recipe Dry Dog Food - 3.5 lbs, 16lbs, and 30lbs bag
The "best before" dates on these bags are November 1, 2018 to November 8, 2019.
The other brands being recalled are:
•Nutrisca •Ahold Delhaize •Natural Life Pet Products •ELM Pet Foods Inc. •Kroger •Lidl (Orlando brand) •ANF Inc.
If you have any of the affected products the FDA suggests to stop feeding it to your pet immediately and contact the brand directly for further instructions. Although vitamin D is an important nutrient for dogs, too much of it can cause vomiting, kidney failure, and even death, according to the FDA. If pet owners suspect their dog is suffering from vitamin D toxicity, they should contact a veterinarian right away.
