School in mourning after kindergartner collapses, dies

Grief counsellors have been brought into Aberdeen public school to help staff and students cope with the death of a 4-year-old kindergartner who died after collapsing on the playground.

The young girl collapsed "without warning" around 2 p.m. Monday during the afternoon nutrient break, wrote Principal Christine Masterson in a letter sent to parents and guardians on Tuesday.

Staff immediately called paramedics and the girl was rushed to hospital where she later died. The cause of death has not been released, but it isn't believed to be suspicious.

"Our thoughts are with her family, her classmates and members of the school community who will remember [her] as a clever, happy child who celebrated life and loved her family and friends,” Masterson wrote about the 4-year-old.

Members of the Thames Valley District school board’s traumatic events response team attended the Grey St. school on Tuesday to offer support to students and staff.

Parents who would like some materials to assist them in talking to their children about the sudden loss are advised to call the school.

Funeral arrangement details have not yet been released.
