Discarded joint starts fire in Western dorm

A carelessly tossed marijuana joint is getting the blame for a fire in a residence room at Western University.

The London fire department says crews were called to a dorm room at O'Neil-Ridley Hall at Huron University College on Friday morning. A fire inspector, working with Western University police and London police, determined that the fire was accidental. Their investigation revealed that the fire began after a discarded joint thrown into a recycling bin caused flames that spread to a bed, causing about $2,000 in damage.

It was also determined that the smoke alarm in the room was covered with a bag to prevent it from working.

“Any careless discard of smoking materials can cause significant fires with potential for serious injury or loss of life. Early detection is key when any fire occurs,” said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Jack Burt. “Altering or impairing a smoke alarm places yourself and others at great risk. I encourage those who smoke to do so responsibly. Smoke outside, use a deep ashtray and when you put it out, be sure to put it right out.”

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
