Fire officials in St. Thomas say there were no working smoke alarms inside of a home where a fire broke out and left one man dead.
Firefighters were called to the home on Rice Road just before noon Thursday.
"Our crews initiated an interior attack, the fire was in the living room area. We kept it to that area, but there is extensive smoke damage throughout the building," said Chief Fire Prevention Officer Bill Todd.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the body of an adult man inside. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Friday.
Investigators with the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office are helping to determine the cause of the fire because of the fatality. The blaze isn't being treated as suspicious, said Todd.
"Working smoke alarms are a big factor in getting out of the home in time in the event of fire and in this particular case there was no working smoke alarm," said Todd.
The name and age of the man killed in the fire have not been released.
