France Wins 2018 FIFA World Cup

France has earned bragging rights all over the globe for its soccer skills after winning the FIFA World Cup.

The team beat Croatia 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the championship in Moscow, Russia. The match concluded the 64-game tournament that began on June 14.

The last time the two countries faced off was 20 years ago in the semi-finals at the 1998 World Cup, when France hosted.

Croatia has never taken home a World Cup. They did make it to the final following an improbable run through the tournament. They defeated tournament mainstay Argentina in round-robin play, then used penalty kicks to beat Denmark, then host Russia, before defeating the English in the semifinal.

The win by the French capped a tournament known for late-match and extra-time heroics and stunning upsets. 2014 champion Germany failed to advance to the knockout round.

The next World Cup is scheduled for Qatar in the late fall of 2022, with Canada, the US and Mexico acting as co-hosts for the 2026 event.
