Plunging temperatures have prompted Environment Canada to issue an Extreme Cold Warning for parts of southwestern Ontario.

Forecasters say the temperature is expected to fall to -20C between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Wind chill values of -30C are likely.

"Extreme cold puts everyone at risk," a statement from Environment Canada says. "Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Check on older family, friends and neighbours."

Frigid temperatures are expected to last the rest of the week, with daytime highs not expected to exceed -10C. Wednesday's overnight low temperature is expected to be -19C, with overnight temperatures likely to be around -13C for the remainder of the week.
