Another London Cop Charged

One week after a London police officer was charged with sexual assault, a second officer has been charged in an unrelated investigation.

Constable Achille Currado, 47, is charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, breach of trust, and obstruction of justice. The charges, announced Thursday, come two months after Currado was suspended with pay.

"While I am not able to comment on the details of the investigation, I can say the allegations, if proven, are very serious and contrary to what is expected of all of our employees, sworn and civilian alike," said Chief John Pare in a statement. "Constable Achille Currado, like every citizen, is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, but as we have said before, trust is the foundation of a police service’s relationship with the people it serves; breaching that trust is not acceptable."

The London Police Service asked the OPP to conduct an internal investigation into Currado in August. The 19-year veteran officer was suspended on September 27. Due to a provision in the current Police Services Act, an officer cannot be suspended without pay when criminal charges are laid.

Last Thursday, a 41-year-old London police officer was charged with sexually assaulting a woman he had been in a relationship with. The incident happened November 17 while the officer was off-duty and was reported to police on November 22. The name of the officer in that incident was not released to protect the identity of the victim.

"I want to assure Londoners that I expect our officers to adhere to both the law and to a higher ethical standard. In those rare cases when officers do not live up to that standard, we do, and will continue to, take action," said Pare.

Currado is scheduled to appear in London court January 8.
