IKEA Opening Full-Sized Store In London

In two years, people in the London area who want to shop at a full-size IKEA store won't have to drive to Burlington or Canton, Michigan.

The company announced Thursday that it will open a full-size store in the city in the fall of 2019. It will be in a new retail complex near Hwy. 401 and Wellington Rd. IKEA Canada says the store will be 270,000 sq ft in size and will lead to the creation of 100-150 new jobs.

“We know our loyal customers in the London area and beyond have been passionate supporters of the IKEA brand,” said IKEA Canada President Marsha Smith in a news release issued Thursday morning. “We look forward to welcoming many more customers to the new IKEA store when it opens in fall 2019.”

London was already home to an IKEA pick-up store on Wonderland Rd., where customers could pick up orders that were placed in-store or online. The store also has a condensed showroom with 75 home furnishing displays and a selection of 99 products to buy on-site.

"This is so exciting and much anticipated for many, many Londoners. I am pleased to say a full-size IKEA store will open in London in 2019,” said London Mayor Matt Brown. “This will create jobs, growth and a regional draw to our city. London is pleased to have a community-minded partner like IKEA set up shop here.”

IKEA says the new store will operate with a committment to the environment. It says is will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified and will have a rooftop solar installation and LED lightning throughout. The company says it will help customers "find solutions that will help them reduce and sort waste, save water and energy and encourage healthier living."

Construction of the store is expected to begin this summer.
