Windsor Man Charged After 401 Chase

A Windsor man is facing several charges after a late-July crime spree and car chase that saw a stolen vehicle drive the wrong way on Hwy. 401.

Elgin OPP say they were called around noon on July 26 about a stolen car being driven erratically in the eastbound lanes of the highway, heading towards Rodney. Chatham-Kent OPP officers spotted the vehicle and tried to pull it over, but the driver tried to elude police, even pulling into oncoming traffic. Police ended the chase for safety reasons.

Later, police were told a man had tried to force other motorists out of their vehicles in the Rodney area. He wasn't able to do so and no injuries were reported.

Around 3pm, police allege the man stole another vehicle in the area of Plank Line in Oxford County. The first stolen vehicle was found nearby. The man is also accused of a gas theft that happened five hours later in the Brant County community of St. George.

The morning of July 27, Wellington OPP officers responded to a suspicious person call in the town of Arthur. They took a man into custody and determined he was the same man wanted for the incidents the day before.

The OPP announced on Tuesday that Claudio Topulli, 25, of Windsor is now charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, possession of property obtained by crime, theft of a vehicle, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, robbery with intent, and intimidation while following on a highway.

He was to appear in court in Guelph for a bail hearing.
