Parents Charged In Assault Of Infant

St. Thomas police say the parents of an infant are accused of causing "significant injuries" to their baby.

Police opened an investigation in early July after the baby was hospitalized. On Thursday, police announced they searched the couple's home in the south end of St. Thomas and seized items "pertaining to the investigation," according to a statement.

The 7-week-old baby's parents, a 24-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, are now each charged with one count of aggravated assault, two counts of assault causing bodily harm, one count of assault, and one count of failing to provide the necessities of life.

Police are not releasing the gender of the infant to protect his/her identity.

"These are gut wrenching investigations for our detectives, especially the ones who have children and grandchildren," said Constable Tanya Calvert. "We want to make sure it's a fair case and we do everything we can to serve justice for this child."

Police say the baby is currently in stable condition in hospital.
