Maracle, Tragically Hip To Receive Order Of Canada

Indigenous activist Sylvia Maracle and members of the Tragically Hip are the latest Canadians to be appointed to the Order of Canada.

Governor General David Johnson made the announcement Thursday.

Hip singer Gord Downie and Maracle will accept their honours at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Monday. Tragically Hip members Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Paul Langois, and Gord Sinclair will recieve theirs at a later date.

In a statement, the Governor General says Downie, Baker, Fay, Langois, and Sinclair are being honoured for "their contribution to Canadian music and for their support of various social and environmental causes." All five will be made Members of the Order of Canada.

In a tweet, the band said, "We are honoured to be receiving the Order of Canada. Thank you to everyone for their support."

Maracle, a Mohawk from the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory east of Toronto and Executive Director of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres, is being honoured "for her leadership in shaping the urban Indigenous experience and for her efforts to promote the well-being of Indigenous peoples across Canada."

She is being made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

“It is a true honour,” Maracle said in a statement on the website of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres. “My hope is that this award continues to keep the issues of urban Indigenous people at the forefront of our national dialogue. There is still so much work to do.”
