Accused Killer Nurse Appears In Court

The Woodstock woman accused of killing eight residents of long-term care homes in Woodstock and London appeared in court via video link on Friday.

Elizabeth Wettlaufer is charged with eight counts of first degree murder, four counts of attempted murder, and two counts of aggravated assault.

At Friday's hearing, Wettlaufer's lawyer Brad Burgess said he will receive more disclosure from the Crown on March 30. In the meantime, a judicial pre-trial is to begin Friday and be completed at Wettlaufer's next court appearance on April 7. She will again appear via video link from the Vanier Centre For Women, where she has been held since her arrest in October.

The only words spoken by the former nurse during her appearance came when she said "morning" to Justice of the Peace Michael McMahon, before stating her name. Her appearance lasted only two minutes.

Unlike in previous appearances, none of the alleged victims' family members were in the courtroom.

Wettlaufer was arrested October 25 and charged with eight counts of first degree murder in the deaths of seven residents of Caressant Care in Woodstock and one resident of Meadow Park nursing home in London.

On January 13, it was announced that she was facing addition charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault. Those charges relate to residents of long-term care homes in Woodstock and Paris, as well as a private home in Oxford County.
