Banner Didn't Breach Western Code Of Conduct

The Western Lives Matter banner that sparked outrage both on and off campus earlier this month did not breach the university's student code of conduct.

Officials at Western made the determination following an investigation into the image which surfaced on social media over the Reunion Weekend on October 1 and 2.

Jana Luker, Westen's associate vice president of student experience, says nobody involved in the incident will be disciplined.

"We looked at the incident of the banner to see if it reached the threshold for breach of our code of conduct. It did not so that was the end of the investigation," says Luker.

The photo showed four young men in front of a bedsheet banner that had been spray painted with the words "Western Lives Matter." Luker condemned the picture a few days after it went viral, calling it repugnant. She argued it trivialized the Black Lives Matter movement.

Although the investigation found the incident was not a violation of the code of conduct, Luker says it sparked a thorough debate and raised awareness.

"We are a place where lively discussion has always been the mandate and we welcome that and look to forums to have that conversation," says Luker. "As an ongoing educational tool we can look at this incident and do an analysis."
