Sattler Open Minded About Throne Speech

A London MPP is taking a wait and see approach to Monday's Speech from the Throne.

London West MPP Peggy Sattler says the NDP has laid out three key priorities it wants the Liberal government to address.

"The first is health care, the second is the cost of hydro, and the third is jobs. Those aren't our priorities. Those are the priorities the people of Ontario want to see action on," says Sattler. "Unless something big is announced in the Throne Speech that moves those issues forward, nothing is going to turn around the fortunes of the Liberal government."

However, even if those priorities don't match those of the Liberal government, Sattler says the NDP is going into the 2nd session of the 41st Parliament of Ontario with an open mind.

"We would never want to commit to supporting something or opposing something until we see the meat of what is in it," says Sattler. "It is possible we would vote against it. We have been as clear as we can with the Premier as to what we want to see in the Throne Speech."

Premier Kathleen Wynne prorogued the Ontario legislature last Thursday to allow her government to deliver the new Throne Speech. The announcement came on the heels of a byelection loss to the Progressive Conservatives in a suburban Toronto riding.

The quick decision has left little time for speculation regarding what new priorities will be outlined in the speech.

"I haven't heard any buzz," says Sattler. "We know that in the wake of the loss of the seat in Scarborough-Rouge River for the Liberals that the Premier said she got the message on hydro rates. There is speculation that the Throne Speech might include something to address the rising cost of hydro."

The speech will be delivered at Queen's Park by Ontario Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell at noon Monday.
