OPP Report Deadly Long Weekend

Provincial police say four people lost their lives as a result of traffic and boating incidents over the Civic holiday weekend.

OPP say one person was killed in a vehicle collision on Saturday while another person died in a boating mishap. On Sunday, a cyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle and another man died when his off-road vehicle collided with another vehicle.

The deaths came on what police are calling a "busy August Long Weekend" which coincided with two education campaigns, the "Slow Down, Move Over" campaign and the "Operation Dry Water" impaired boating campaign.

Despite the attempt at spreading a message of safety, police say more than 450 drivers were ticketed for failing to slow down or move over for emergency vehicles or tow trucks at the side of the road. More than 180 alcohol and other marine-related charges were laid as police checked boats on waterways across Ontario.
