UPDATE: Arrest Made After Dead Baby Found In Dumpster

London police say they have made an arrest in connection with the discovery of a dead baby in a dumpster.

Police announced the arrest in a news release Saturday afternoon and have now charged a 23-year-old woman, who has been identified as the mother of the child.

An investigation was launched Thursday after the infant's body was found in a dumpster near Richmond St. and Mill St. around 11:30am. On Friday, police issued an appeal to the public in hopes of finding the child's mother, who police were concerned may be in need of medical attention. Police said they were concerned for the mother’s health and well-being because, without proper medical care, she could be in significant pain, bleeding internally, and at risk of serious infection.

The child's mother was located and arrested in Amherstburg Saturday morning, with assistance from the Amherstburg Police Service. Police say the woman received medical attention and was then transported back to London.

The 23-year-old woman has been charged with neglecting to obtain assistance in child birth, and disposing the body of a child after delivery.

Police say it will likely take weeks or months before the infant's final autopsy results are completed and a cause of death is determined.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
