London is dropping the number of garbage containers residents are allowed to place at the curb.
Council approved a staff recommendation to lower the limit from four garbage containers to three on Tuesday.
According to city staff, 91% of households are already putting three containers or less out on garbage day. The reduction is expected to create a minor increase in waste diversion and a minor reduction to service costs.
Since phasing in a four container limit in 2006, the average household has cut the amount of garbage heading to the curb by 20%. The previous limit was 16 containers.
Councillor Stephen Turner put forward a motion to have the limit reduced even further, to two containers. His motion was defeated by a vote of 9-3.
The new three container limit takes effect January 2017.
