Suspicious Package Closes Westervelt College

A suspicious package that forced the evacuation of Westervelt College turned out to be nothing more than a backpack full of wires and scrap metal.

London police were called to the school on Wellington Rd after an employee found a black and red backpack with what appeared to be a metal box with some exposed wires at the northwest corner of the building around 8:35am Monday.

As a precaution, the school's roughly 200 students were sent home and classes were cancelled for the day.

The Explosive Disposal Unit was brought in shortly after the discovery. The bomb disposal robot was sent to get a closer look at the bag before an officer in full safety gear took x-rays.

Using the x-rays police determined the suspicious package was not explosive in nature and chose to open the bag rather than detonate it. It was at this point police confirmed the bag was not a threat.

Constable Sandasha Bough says the investigation is continuing as police try to determine who owns the bag and why it was left at the college.

She encourages anyone who comes across a suspicious looking package to play it safe and call police immediately.

"If you're ever concerned about what might be in a package, if something just doesn't appear right, give us a call," says Bough. "We will come out, we will investigate it, we will send out Explosive Disposal Unit if we need to, just to ensure that everybody is safe."

Westervelt College will resume classes on Tuesday.
