Road Safety Urged As School Year Ends

It is officially the last day of school in London and police are asking drivers to be on the lookout for excited school-aged children playing outside.

Sgt. Amanda Pfeffer in the traffic unit says the most common type of collision this time of year is between children riding their bikes on the sidewalks and cars leaving a driveway.

Pfeffer says while the message is for drivers to be on the lookout, it is also a great time to talk to kids about road safety.

"Looking both ways before crossing the street is one of the most important points, but I would also like parents to encourage their children to cross and crosswalks and if they are out after dark they need to be aware that vehicles have a very difficult time seeing them, whether they're skateboarding, riding a bicycle or walking," Pfeffer tells BlackburnNews.com. "You have to be aware they will be riding their bicycles, running and crossing the street where they shouldn't be."

She says it is key to slow down and keep an eye out while travelling through residential areas.
