Panel Says Bruce DGR Would Not Cause Significant Adverse Environmental Effects

The Joint Review Panel on the Deep Geologic Repository on the Bruce nuclear site says the DGR is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, including to Lake Huron.

In their 426-page report to the Minister of Environment, the panel also says the project is unlikely to cause any significant adverse health effects.

The federal government will now review the panel's report before issuing a decision statement on whether or not the project will proceed.

They have 120 days to either accept or reject the report and the recommendations.

If the DGR is approved, Ontario Power Generation plans to store 200,000 cubic metres of dry low-and-intermediate level nuclear waste nearly 700 metres below the Bruce nuclear site.
