Recycling Company Fined In Worker's Death

A recycling company has been fined $225,000 in the death of a worker in Oxford County.

On May 1, 2013, the worker lost control of a side-loading waste collection truck on Blandford-Blenheim Township Rd. 4, and was ejected, sustaining head injuries upon striking the pavement. The worker died later that day from his injuries.

Halton Recycling Ltd., operating as Emterra Environmental, pleaded guilty in relation to the workers death after it was determined that the truck was traveling well over the recommended speed. Several other drivers with the company acknowledged operating vehicles at the same speed, which went against a policy most were not aware of.

As well, the truck was equipped with an occupant safety restraint device that was not in use, and a door safety restraint device that was not functional.

Along with the fine, the court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
