London’s Wortley Village and the entire Old South community could soon be designated as a heritage district.

Some local residents have been pushing for the designation after several older buildings in the area were demolished or transformed.

“They ask that you try to protect what makes the buildings unique, but you can certainly have adaptive, reused buildings,” says London Mayor Joni Baechler. “They welcome redevelopment in the area, but when you redevelop in this area be sensitive to the heritage and the street scape.”

Baechler notes when communities become a heritage district often property values rise.

Council will vote on the designation at Tuesday’s meeting.
