Elderly Woman Charged With Attempted Murder

An elderly woman has been charged with the attempted murder of her husband.

London police were called to a city home by EMS Sunday night after an 83-year-old man and 84-year-old woman were found by a family member in medical distress.

Police say the couple had consumed a "quantity of medication" in an apparent murder-suicide attempt. Both were taken to hospital.

The victim has since been discharged, while the 84-year-old woman remains in hospital in good condition.

Two family pet cats were also poisoned, though neither were harmed.

Police say the 83-year-old victim suffers from dementia related to an underlying medical condition and was signed out of the long-team care facility where he lives.

"There is no indication that there were any concerns leading up to this incident. The long-term care facility didn't do anything wrong. Proper procedure was followed," says Constable Ken Steeves.

An unidentified 84-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder and with administering a poisonous substance to a domestic animal.

She will appear in court via audio Wednesday.

Police will not be releasing the identities of those involved or where the incident happened due to the domestic nature of the relationship between the victim and the accused.
