Provincial Cash For New London Schools

Three new schools will be built in London and one will be retrofitted thanks to an infusion of cash from the provincial government.

The province announced Monday that it will spend $498-million to build 30 new schools and over 2,000 child care spaces across Ontario.

The London District Catholic School Board will use its share of the money to build a new Regina Mundi Catholic College and a new "family centre" at St. Francis Catholic School.

The two projects come with a combined price tag of nearly $19.5 million.

The Thames Valley District School Board will see cash for new facilities in the northeast and northwest. Both of the new public elementary schools will include 5 child care rooms, offering 88 child care spaces each.

The two new facilities will cost roughly $27.7-million and are hoped to open in time for the 2017 school year.

Work will begin on the projects over the next few months.

"Our government is proud to invest in capital projects that are improving students’ learning environments and increasing access to quality licensed child care," says Education Minister Liz Sandals. "These projects are bringing students and communities together — and in some cases reducing the cost of under-used space so we can reinvest savings back into the classroom."

More than $11-billion is being given to school boards across Ontario over 10 years for infrastructure improvements.
