Mulcair Touts Infrastructure Plan In London

The leader of the federal NDP says he would give cities more of the federal gas tax so they can address their infrastructure needs.

Speaking Friday morning near the Blackfriars Bridge, Tom Mulcair announced an NDP government would transfer an additional cent of the existing gas tax to municipalities.

“Under the Conservatives, the infrastructure deficit in cities and small towns across the country has been allowed to grow to a staggering $172-billion,” says Mulcair. “Stephen Harper’s plan just isn’t working. Canadian roads and bridges are crumbling, buses and trains are overflowing and, in many communities, water infrastructure is in desperate need of major repair.”

He also promised $1.3-billion in funding every year for 20 years for transit, which he says would create more than 31,000 middle-class jobs in construction, manufacturing and transit.

Mulcair was in London for a rally on Thursday night and for Friday's announcement as part of his "Ontario Tour For Change."
