Street Checks to Undergo Scrutiny

Police street checks are going under closer inspection by the London Police Services Board after concerns were raised by Ward 3 Councillor Mo Salih.

He brought the issue forward after similar questions were asked about the practice in Toronto, where it's called carding.

Salih tells Blackburn News these seemingly random stops need to be audited.

London police officers conducted 8,400 checks last year. Salih says he looked over the stats and found a disproportionate number of visible minorities were stopped. Police say the checks help them identify criminals.

At the Police Services Board meeting last week, members expressed a willingness to take a closer look at why these checks are done. Salih says he's encouraged by that the conversation has been started and that police are perhaps willing to work with the province on some guidelines.
